Cheer and Dance Life

The Do's and Don'ts of Cheer and Dance Makeup

Makeup is an important part of the cheer and dance life, so making sure you do it right is key! We understand that for some people, doing makeup can be a bit of a challenge. Not all of us are professional makeup artists. That said, let’s go through some of the do’s and don’ts of cheer and dance makeup so you can feel confident next time you have to apply your performance makeup!

#1) Consider the age group.

DO: For younger girls, less is better. A simple one-color application of powder eye shadow, winged eyeliner, and mascara create a simple dramatic look. If you are applying glitter, a simple glitter eyelid is easy to accomplish using just a touch of sparkle.

DON’T: Going overboard is never a good option, especially when the girls are doing the makeup themselves. Older girls are more capable of applying a more complex makeup look using more than one color whereas younger girls may not even know what a smokey eye look is yet. Create makeup kits with no more than 2 colors for the younger girls allowing the older girls to use an expanded color palette.

Pro Tip: Try our ColorOn Instant Eye Shadow. It is easy for everyone with a large and small size and does not cause a mess! Depending on the makeup look you are going for, our instant eye makeup can be a perfect go-to.

Here are some easy to use products for a simple yet stunning look:

#2) It's all about that base.

DO: Wear a light layer of foundation and apply concealer to cover more noticeable blemishes.  Use an Eye Primer to create a waterproof sweatproof makeup application.  Eye primer works as a glue to enhance the eye shadow color and keep it in place all day.

DON’T: We would not recommend caking a thick layer of foundation on your face, it creates an unnatural color tone with the stage lights. If you are wearing white, be very careful, the foundation will rub off on your uniform or costume.  If your foundation is not sweatproof, it will not end up looking as good later in the day. A light layer is perfect to give you a flawless look. The concealer will help with anything more noticeable.

#3) Smudge-Proof Lips are a must.

DO: Apply a sweatproof and smudge-proof lip product. There is nothing worse than having to reapply your lipstick over and over throughout the day. Try our lip paint or lip stain collection. These lip products are completely sweatproof and smudge-proof, giving you beautiful, long-lasting wear time for your performance.

Dance Makeup

DON'T:  Do not buy lipstick or lip gloss as these products are high in emollients, waxes, and smudge easily.

#4) We are here to help you create the perfect look.

DO: For those of you that are not versed in applying stage makeup, consult with the cheer and dance makeup professionals. Find out what products will work best for your team and how to apply those products properly. If you'd rather try to learn yourself, YouTube it! YouTube is the perfect place with endless videos on how to apply performance makeup.

DON’T: Never just wing it (no pun intended 😉) when doing performance makeup. There are so many things that can turn into a disaster, so it is better safe than sorry. Reach out for help or search it if you want to learn how to properly apply performance makeup.

All-in-all, every team is different. The most important thing for you to do when deciding what makeup to wear and the look you are going for is to know your stuff! Learn about the products you want to purchase, understand the environment you are going to be in while wearing the makeup, and teach yourself how to properly apply it.

If you need help, reach out to us and we will be happy to help you find the best makeup products for you and teach you how to apply them!
